An art of self-defence which emphasises good body movement, throws and joint locks is known as Aikido. When using this form of martial art properly, violent aggression can be neutralised swiftly and cleanly so that effective self-defence is possible without inflicting injury.
The Bahrain Aikido Academy recently flew over Aikido masters from Romania for a three-day workshop in order to create a buzz for the sport.

The sessions were held at the academy located in Somerset Al Fateh in Juffair. It was run by the academy's Moroccan sensei Soufiane Nidbelaid and the three masters – fourth-dan black belt Adrian Bunea and second-dan black belts Mihai Vladu and Cristina Ghinea.

The masters displayed basic techniques like IKKYO, NIKYO, SANKYO, YONKYO and GOKYO, and demonstrated how AIKIDO can be efficient against other martial arts techniques. They also performed throw techniques like IRIMI NAGE, KOKYU NAGE, TENCHI NAGE and others.

The next AIKIDO event will take place in January.

Sensei Nidbelaid said: "AIKIDO is becoming more and more popular in Bahrain. It is very accessible to all ages and the benefit of practicing the art varies. It is not restricted to self-defence or learning how to fight. There is a complex philosophy behind it and we hope to educate a great number of people in Bahrain. We are hoping to introduce the sport in schools and universities as AIKIDO can help people not only to get fit but to be more productive in their life and jobs. It allows you to be better focused, centered and balanced."

According to Romanian master, Sensei Adrian Bunea, AIKIDO is a way of life. He said: "We believe that it doesn't matter what country you come from. Everyone can practice the sport and we are very proud to be a part of this complete martial art."

AIKIDO is often translated as "the way of unifying (with) life energy" or as "the way of harmonious spirit."

Developed by MORIHEI UESHIBA, the Japanese martial art is a synthesis of his studies, philosophy, and religious beliefs. His goal was to create an art that practitioners could use to defend themselves while also protecting their attacker from injury.

It is performed by blending with the motion of the attacker and redirecting the force of their attack rather than opposing it head-on. This requires very little physical strength, as the AIKIDOKA (practitioner) leads the attacker's momentum using entering and turning movements to use their own energy against them. The techniques are completed with various throws or joint locks. AIKIDO can be categorised under the general umbrella of grappling arts.

According to 32-year-old Teodor Ardeleanu, the director of room operations in the Marriott Executive Apartments, AIKIDO can be practiced by children and adults – young or old.

Mr. Ardeleanu said: "I arrived in Bahrain two years ago and joined the academy last year. I have practiced many forms of martial arts such as SHOTOKAN KARATE, Kick Boxing, Thai Boxing (MUAY THAI), TAI CHI CHUAN and BA GUA. I have also been doing AIKIDO for more than seven years and I believe that it is the most complete form of martial art. The best part is that you can practice AIKIDO your entire life. With AIKIDO, you will always be fit and most importantly your mind will be fit too."

The academy holds classes every Saturday, Monday and Wednesday from 7 p.m. through 8:30 p.m. There is also a special class for children on the same days from 6 p.m. through 7 p.m.
